Treasures of Luang Prabang

Allow us to help you to discover the hidden treasures of our World Heritage City of Luang Prabang and to transport you to a different world – a world in which time seems to stand still. Our city of Luang Prabang has long been a city of kings and has one of the richest histories in all of South East Asia.

This charming, recently restored ancient capital, set in the mountains at the confluence of two rivers, offers tranquillity and a friendly welcome.

Day 1 : Arrival Luang Prabang

We will meet you on your arrival in Luang Prabang and escort you to your hotel in the centre of the city. There will be time for a short rest. After which your visit will begin with the National Museum – once the royal palace – but now home to an introduction to the history of Laos. Learn about the Lao leaders, fighters and martyrs – of both ancient times and the more recent revolutionary period. Luang Prabang is a city full of temples but we have chosen the best examples for you to visit.

So after the museum you will visit two magnificent temples - Wat Visoun and the city’s oldest temple and one of the best examples of the classical architecture of Luang Prabang - Wat Xienthong. Now it’s time for you to stretch your legs and climb the steps of Mount Phousi to view not only the sacred stupa perched on its top but also to enjoy gazing out over the city and river, and marvel at the beautiful sunset. Then it’s back down to explore the Night Market where you can hunt and bargain for a range of locally made handicrafts. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 2 : Cruise up the river to Pakou Cave & drive to Waterfall

Today offers a change of pace and surroundings. After breakfast we will take a boat to the mysterious Pak Ou Cave containing thousands of Buddha images of all shapes and sizes. On the way, we will stop at Ban Xanghai. This village is famous for the production of Lao Khao – one of the national drinks of Laos – made by the distillation of rice. Watch the process and taste the product.

We will also visit the two Lao-Loum villages of Ban Chan and Ban Xiengmene. Lunch will be served in one of Luang Prabang’s favourite restaurants where you should try some of the province’s specialities. On our way to Kuangsi Waterfall there are stops in two more ethnic minority villages – Ban Na Oune, a Hmong village and Ban Tha Pane, a small Khmu village. You will have the opportunity to see how widely different the ethnic minorities are – in the style of their houses, their dress and their beliefs and customs. Then it’s on to the waterfall set in the lush green surroundings of one of the country’s National Biodiversity Conservation Areas.

Cool off by splashing around in the clear pools and just stroll around and enjoy the forest scenery. We will return to Luang Prabang by late afternoon stopping at Ban Xangkhong, a weaving village. Watch how the weavers produce intricate patterns on home looms. The final visit of the day is to Wat Siphouthabath where you can see the footprints of the Buddha – a relaxing finale to your day. Overnight in Luang Prabang (B, L)*

Day 3 : Depart Luang Prabang

No visit to Luang Prabang is complete without watching the early morning procession of the saffron-clad monks each carrying his bowl along the street lined with Buddhist faithful earning merit by making offerings of food. However an early rise is necessary. Then we head for the Morning Market, the best place to buy presents for your friends and relatives. After breakfast, you will be free and have time for your own exploration of the town before your transfer to the airport. (B, L)
