Laos Heritage Tour


Laos is a country with a rich and colourful past. This tour is designed to introduce you to just some of its heritage. It begins with Vientiane, the capital, which still shows the influences of the past.

Visit the more distant past in Xieng Khouang’s Plain of Jars and see the ravages of the more recent Vietnam War. Visit the World Heritage City of Luang Prabang and wonder at the pomp and splendour of the temples in the former royal capital. Travel by boat on the great Mekong River - for centuries the lifeblood of the region - through unspoilt nature to Tam Ting Cave and glimpse the unchanged lifestyle of the ethnic minority groups.

Day 1 : Arrive Vientiane

We will meet you when you arrive and escort you to your centrally located hotel. After a short rest, we set out on a short orientation of Vientiane, the capital. We will take a leisurely stroll around the city and watch the sun setting over the Mekong River and later in the evening see how the Lao people live.

Day 2 : Tour Vientiane and fly to Xieng Khouang – the Plain of Jars

After breakfast, first we visit Talat Sao, the Morning Market, to see locally made handicrafts – silks, textiles, jewellery and carvings – then explore some of the best sights – the Victory Gate and the beautiful golden That Luang Stupa.

Then we fly to Xieng Khouang to visit the Plain of Jars (1, 2, 3) - an impressive archaeological site where you will marvel at the hundreds of large stone jars littered all over a wide plateau, see the old capital of Moung Khoun province and visit a nearby traditional village, before being taken to your hotel in Phonsavanh for your overnight stay. Day 3 : Drive to the World Heritage City of Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is home to many ethnic minorities with differing national dress, customs and beliefs. Each day these minorities living high in the mountains around the town bring many strange animals and forest products to sell in the Morning Market. An early morning stroll around here is a must, as is the chance to sample a typical Lao breakfast. Next comes a visit to a Hill Tribe village where you can see the people’s interesting local culture and learn something of their colourful history.

Then it’s off to Khum Bome - a village devastated by American bombs between 1964 and 1973. We then take a long drive of about 6 - 7 hours to Luang Prabang. On the way we stop in Thampra to see the Buddha images reputed as being more than 200 years old. Along the road there is a wide variety of Hmong and other ethnic minority villages where friendly people will give you a warm welcome.

After taking photographs we continue our drive climbing up the mountain through splendid natural scenery and pristine forests. After a tea or coffee break at Sala Phoukhoun, at the junction with the Vientiane-Luang Prabang Road, we continue our journey through the mountains to Luang Prabang, the ancient capital of the Lane Xang Kingdom (the Land of a Million Elephants) and now a World Heritage City for our overnight stay. Day 4 : Tour Luang Prabang City

The day starts with a visit to the National Museum – once the Royal Palace – but now giving a picture of the various leaders and fighters famous in Lao history, from long ago and up to the present new revolutionary period. After this enjoy a sightseeing tour of two magnificent temples: Wat Visoun and Wat Xienthong - the city’s oldest temple and one of the best examples of Luang Prabang’s classical architecture. Then after lunch we take a short drive to Ban Xangkhong - a weaving village and to Ban XiangLek – a village producing “sa” paper. Watch the process and taste the product. Then we will climb up the steps to the top of Mount Phousi where you can see the sacred stupa and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the city and the laid out beath you.

And at night we will explore Night Market Street, where you will be able to find lovely handicrafts made by our local people. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 5 : Visit Khuang Si Waterfall and see the Footprints of the Buddha

You may like to get up early to see the morning procession of monks along Sisavangvong Road lined with the local people waiting to make their offerings of food.

Then after breakfast we take a short drive to Ban Xangkhong - a weaving village and to Ban XiangLek – a village producing “sa” paper. Then it’s a long drive to Kuang Si Waterfall set in the lush green surroundings of one of the National Conservation Areas. En route, there are stops to visit the small villages of Ban Na Oune, a Hmong village, and Ban Tha Pane, a Khmu minority village.

Then it’s back to Luang Prabang by the late afternoon The day will end with a visit to see the footprints of the Buddha at Wat Siphouthabath. Overnight in Luang Prabang (B, L)

Day 6 : By boat to Pakbeng

The boat leaves Luang Prabang pier at 08:00 am for a cruise up the Mekong River to Pakbeng. En route it stops at Pak-Ou village at the mouth of the Nam Ou River for a visit to Tam Ting – the "Cave of a Thousand Buddhas". There is a chance to see rural life along the Mekong and to visit minority ethnic groups; then, a buffet lunch on board.

We arrive in Pakbeng before sunset and check-in at the Luang Say Lodge. Dinner is on the terrace overlooking the Mekong River. Overnight in Pakbeng at the Pakbeng Lodge. (B, L)

Day 7 : By boat to Houai Xai

After a full breakfast served on the boat and a walk around the city to the Pakbeng market, (where people from the surrounding minority villages exchange their goods) we leave at 08:30.

En route there will be stops to see rural life along the Mekong and to visit ethic minority groups; then, a buffet lunch on board. Relax for the rest of the trip and enjoy the fine views until we reach our final destination of Houai Xai.
